OC Mashups Winter 2017 Homebrew Competition

OC Mashups is proud to announce our January Team-Up Competition, presented by Bootlegger’s Brewery!  In our Team-Up Competition, we’ll be pairing up club members to see which team can brew the best beer – with the grand prize winner getting to brew a batch on Bootlegger’s 7-Barrel pilot system!

This competition runs a little bit differently than previous competitions; we’re going to be teaming up our club members based on their respective skill levels.

Quick Date Guide

  • Register for the competition by filling out the Registration Form by October 31st
  • Teams will be revealed at our club meeting on  November 7th
  • Fill out the Team Entry Form by January 13th
  • Drop off your entries at Barley Forge or Bootlegger’s tasting room in Fullerton between January 23rd and January 27th
  • Competition results will be announced at our club meeting on February 13th

Qualifications

All beer entered must be developed by homebrewers, on a homebrew system. No individuals belonging to a professional brewing agency may enter.  Previous winning beer entries are not allowed.  Previous winning entrants may enter the competition using a different brew recipe.  Entries must be entered under the name of the person(s) entering it.  Do not use a business or fictitious name.

Entrants must be a paid Grist member at the time of entry.  If you are not a Grist member, please sign up today! Entrants must fill in the entry form no later than October 31st, 2016.  

Team Selections

During the November 7th club meeting, entrant’s names will be placed into two hats, one for novice brewers and one for advanced brewers.  These categories are based solely upon submitted answers on the entry form.  One novice and one advanced brewer name will be drawn at random to form the team.  A follow up email will be sent to teammates with their respective contact information.

All teams are final.  If an entrant wishes to dispute or contest a team, the Orange County Mash Ups Governing Committee will consider the dispute, and if necessary, reassign the teams.  However, note that the Orange County Mash Ups Governing Committee’s decisions are final and further correspondence will be entered into only upon the Committee’s discretion.

It is the entrant’s sole responsibility to coordinate schedule, brewing time, and contact information.  Orange County Mashups is not liable for the entries submitted by the team, or the schedule and disposition of respective team members.

Entry

Teams are eligible to submit one entry.

Teams must fill out the Team Entry Form no later than January 13th, 2017.  Each online form submission will count as a single entry for the team.  If a team enters more beer than eligible, additional entries will be disqualified.

Submit two (2) 10-ounce to 14-ounce bottles per entry.  Bottles must be free of ink, paint, and labeling other than competition entry labels.  Bottles may not include any identifying marks.  Bottles with raised lettering or logos are acceptable.  Caps with non-identifying logos (for example a hop pellet, American flag, or the Barley Forge logo) are also acceptable.  If any member of the judging panel considers a mark identifying, the entry will be disqualified.  Operator(s) and Judge(s) have final discretion on the determination of identifying marks.  Attach a Competition Label to each bottle with one (1) to two (2) rubber bands.  Do not use tape or glue.  Certain entry styles require additional entry information to be properly evaluated.  Refer to the BJCP 2015 Style Guidelines for identification.  Do not provide additional details unless prompted to by the BJCP guidelines.

If you have special instructions for the judges (for instance, to roll a bottle before opening) this may be included on the competition label.

All entries must be dropped off at Barley Forge or Bootlegger’s tasting room in Fullerton between January 23rd and January 27th.  Entries will not be accepted before or after the submission period and will be turned away.  Entrants are responsible for the presentation of their bottles and delivery. Barley Forge,Bootlegger’s Brewery, and the Orange County Mash Ups accept no liability.

Entries will be judged to the BJCP 2015 Style Guidelines.

Excluded styles include the following, with the exception of kettle sours:

28A. Brett Beer
28B. Mixed-Fermentation Sour Beer
28C. Wild Specialty Beer

Judging

Judges will be BJCP qualified and entries will be judged against the BJCP 2015 Style Guidelines. Judges have the power to disqualify an entry at any time.

Results

Results will be announced at the February 13th club meeting.  Judging score sheets will be distributed at that time.  The “Best in Show” winning team will be eligible to brew their entry with Bootlegger’s Brewery on their 7-barrel pilot system.  If the “Best in Show” winning team is unavailable or unable to do so, a backup will be selected.  Bootlegger’s Brewery will have final discretion on selection and formulation of the winning recipe.
